Therapies

Q.Schema therapy. A: Schema Therapy is an innovative psychotherapy for long lasting problems such as relationship issues, chronic depression and anxiety and character or personality difficulties. Sometimes short term Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is not effective in the treatment of these long term emotional and behavioural difficulties. If you feel inadequate compared to other people all the time, if you don’t understand why you are drawn to cold and detached partners or if you find that regardless your accomplishments you still feel unfulfilled and unhappy, Schema Therapy might be an answer to your problems.

In Schema Therapy we start your sessions by identifying your schemas that may underlie your depression, anxiety or relationship problems. Schemas are very important beliefs and feelings about oneself and the world that are developed in childhood and the individual accepts without question. They are self -perpetuating and resistant to change. For example, children who developed a schema that they are incompetent will continue feeling this way as adults. It is also important to mention that schemas are formed when a basic need of a child was not met and later the schema prevents similar needs being fulfilled in adulthood. For example, a child whose need for love and attachment was not met by his parents may go for many years in later life without secure, happy relationships.

The ultimate goal of Schema Therapy is to identify your schemas and dysfunctional coping styles, then engage in healing the schemas and eventually getting emotional needs met in every day life by engaging in more healthy relationships with others.

Q.Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. A: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a relatively short-term psychotherapy for a wide range of psychological problems such as anxiety, anger, depression and fears. The focus of the therapy is how you are thinking, feeling and behaving today rather than your childhood experiences. CBT therapy is a structured therapy, you and your therapist will set an agenda for each session. The agenda might include reviewing your “homework” assignments or one or two current problems. The goal of the therapy is to solve the problems, so you will learn a new set of coping mechanisms.

A lot of studies have demonstrated that CBT is as effective as medication for depression and anxiety. Furthermore, clients are able to maintain their improvement after therapy has ended because of the new coping skills they have learnt.

Q.Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy(EFT). A: Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT) is a highly researched, effective and evidence-based treatment focusing on the emotional bond between partners, presuming that most relational problems arise from a disruption in this bond. It helps partners to learn not only to be more open and trusting with each other, but also to reach out for one another more effectively.

EFT helps us to address the core questions about our most important relationship: Do I matter deeply to my partner? Will he/she be there for me when I need them most? Do I feel safe and secure enough in the relationship to be my full and authentic self?

These questions are typically at the root of what couples fight about: the emotional bond and security in their relationship. This is the case even when we think we’re arguing about money, sex, kids, or the thermostat setting for the house. When we fear that the answer to one of the above attachment-bond questions may be “no”, it can cause us to feel isolated and alone. It may even feel as though we are fighting for survival itself. And fight we will, or withdraw.

Most couples therapy only brings about a 36% improvement for couples after therapy had ended with this falling to 18% after a year (Gottman, 2007).

However over a decade’s worth of studies on Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy show that 70-73% of couples with EFT move from distress to recovery within 12-20 sessions, and approximately 86-90% show significant improvements in their relationship (Johnson, 2004).

At the Mayfair Clinic we use EFT as our foundational Couples Therapy model, combining it when required with Schema Therapy for Couples. This allows us to explore how conflicts  are linked to each partner’s personality-based “raw spots” or schema. Recognising and working with these, we can learn how to better express our needs in our relationships, as well as meeting these needs for our partners as well as ourselves.”

Q. Supervision. A: Supervision We offer Schema therapy supervision for trainees working towards accreditation in Schema Therapy and for clinicians who use the schema model in their therapy work. We offer face to face, skype and phone supervision sessions. A supervision sessions costs £ 90 and lasts 50 mins.

I love food! I love eating it, cooking it and learning about it. In fact, I’d say my love of food has been one of the defining factors in my personal and professional life. It inspired me to becoming a chef and sparked a fascination in nutrition leading me a BSc in Public Health and Nutrition and currently, an MSc in Dietetics.

My previous work as a NHS public health nutritionist and weight management instructor has provided a wealth of experience in helping others achieve their health goals. You will be provided with knowledge, guidance and support to ensure you are able to make long-term dietary changes individualised to your needs and targets. I firmly believe a diet should be as delicious as it is good for you, and with my unique set of cooking and nutrition skills you will be helped every step of the way to achieving this.
